EAL Writing Retreat In-Person

What is EAL Writing Retreat?

This four-day in-person program (Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm) is designed for English language learners who are working on significant writing projects (e.g. major research papers, master’s theses, or PhD dissertations).  Participants attend short workshops and group discussions to build skills.  They also receive one-on-one feedback and support from a Writing Specialist.

Is EAL Writing Retreat for you?

  • Are you a student at the University of Guelph?
  • Are you working on a major paper, proposal, thesis, or dissertation?
  • Is writing in the English language a struggle for you?
  • Would you like to write in a supportive community of students who are also learning English as an additional language?

If you answered yes to these questions, then this program is for you!

When will the next EAL Writing Retreat be offered?

Monday, June 23 - Thursday, June 26, 2025

*Please note: Participants are expected to attend all 4 days of the program.

What do the workshops focus on?

  • Common grammatical structures in academic writing
  • Useful vocabulary and phrasing for scholarly communication
  • Elements of academic writing style (e.g., cohesion and clarity)

NOTE: This camp DOES NOT focus on thesis/dissertation organization and structure.

How do I register?

  • Please register only for the first day of the camp (Monday, June 23). Your registration for the first day automatically applies to all 4 days. Registration closes on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
