Exhibit Launch - From Glen Notes to War Notes: A Canadian Perspective on the First World War in Rilla of Ingleside

Exhibit Launch - From Glen Notes to War Notes: A Canadian Perspective on the First World War in Rilla of Ingleside

"From Glen Notes to War Notes: A Canadian Perspective on the First World War in Rilla of Ingleside," was co-curated by students and faculty in the University of Guelph's (U of G) Department of History and the library's Archival & Special Collections (A&SC) staff. The exhibit explores the different viewpoints on the war of seven characters in L.M. Montgomery's novel, including Anne, Susan, Rilla, Walter, Jem, Shirley, and Whiskers-on-the-Moon.

Materials in the exhibit were drawn from the U of G Library's extensive L.M. Montgomery Collection in A&SC. Original copies of Montgomery's scrapbooks, journals, and early editions of her books will be on view in six cases in the new ASC gallery and reading room. To contextualize the materials against the novel's First World War backdrop, we have incorporated materials from the period of the War found in the archives of OAC, OVC, and Mac. This will be the first time that the manuscript of Rilla of Ingleside in Montgomery's hand, will be exhibited to the public. During the course of "From Glen Notes to War Notes: A Canadian Perspective on the First World War in Rilla of Ingleside," we will display this in its entirety to reveal Montgomery's creative and editorial processes.

If you can't come to the opening, we hope you can see our new exhibit, which will be up through the fall term at no charge. From March 8, 2018, through October 2018, "From Glen Notes to War Notes: A Canadian Perspective on the First World War in Rilla of Ingleside," can be viewed in the cases in our new gallery, next door to the A&SC reading room on the 2nd floor of the library.
